The AKC Family Dog Program offers a structured way to teach essential behaviors while working toward earning AKC titles. With step-by-step support, you’ll strengthen your relationship with your dog, tackle any behavior challenges, and see measurable progress as you work toward a confident, happy, well-behaved pup.
These tests are open to all dogs–purebred and mixed breed.
With the exception of S.T.A.R. Puppy, there are no age minimums or limits for participating in these programs.

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy
AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is a program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. To earn this title your puppy must attend a 6 week S.T.A.R. puppy class and pass the corresponding test at the last class. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy training is a natural lead in to the AKC® Canine Good Citizen® Program.

Virtual Home Manners
The Virtual Home Manners tests assess ten skills that well-mannered pet dogs need in the home setting. The skills relate to the dog owner having control over the dog, being able to walk the dog and developing a bond with the dog during playtime.

Trick Dog
There are five AKC Trick Titles you and your dog can earn. Tricks are behaviors that are designed to entertain others. AKC Trick Dog ranges from very simple novice tricks such as teaching your dog to get in a box on cue, to complex tricks that are several behaviors chained together in one exciting sequence.

Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
Canine Good Citizen is a 10-skill test that teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners. The 10 test items on the CGC test are practical, functional behaviors that every dog should have to be welcomed in the community.

Community Canine
(CGCA)
AKC Community Canine is the advanced level of AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. While CGC tests are simulations of real world skills, the goal of AKC Community Canine is to test the dog’s skills in a natural setting.

Urban
Canine Good Citizen
(CGCU)
A public access test that demonstrates dogs are well-behaved and well-trained when in public settings. The test requires that the dog demonstrate CGC skills and beyond in a setting that includes traffic, crowds, noises, smells and other distractions that are present in a city or town.
